There’s many ways to manipulate paths with the width tool. You don’t necessarily need to ‘add’ or draw in a new line, just extend the line or make it smaller so that it connects with another line and creates a closed shape.

I feel like this should be easier, as it wasn’t immediately apparent to me. Use following settings in Adobe Illustrator: Line width for cut lines must be 0.001 mm. Stroke the inside or outside of unclosed paths Then highlight the points and you can adjust, remove or add more points as necessary.įollow the same process as earlier to save and then you’re able to use it for everything else. Highlight the pointĬhoose your existing width profile. Some of them have larger amounts of width tool adjustments. Customising an existing width profileĬustomising can be the tricky part, as the presets can be a little awkward to adjust. Towards the bottom, you’ll see profile and a button to the right of it. Where you are presented with all the stroke options. With the line selected, open the Stroke panel by choosing Window > Stroke. Create any line (straight or curved) with two end points. To flip the path, you can click stroke in the control panel. In Illustrator CS6, turning any line into an arrow with arrowheads and tails is easy. You can flip the variable width profile on either axis. It doesnt necessarily work with all programs and sometimes lacks the shapes and elements that designers often need. Even though it comes with many built-in features there are areas where it falls short. You can draw a path and change the variable width, and it appears to go against the way you want it. Adobe Illustrator is a powerful vector based program that lets you create and customize vector-based shapes, text, and artwork.

Click that and the first of 3 buttons at the bottom, is the add to profiles. You should see the stroke width in the top control panel, along side that, is the variable width dropdown. To add it to your presets, with your stroke selected.

Add the width profile to your presets for later reuse. When you select the line with the Effect on it, then choose Object > Expand Appearance (above), it will convert the line into the actual shape of the effect.
